In Chicago’s most exclusive residential district, in the first building designed by Robert S. De Golyer on the exclusive Lake Shore Drive, an apartment which has remained intact since the 1920s has become the home of a couple of architects and interior designers specialised in the restoration of historic buildings. Blending their professional experience and their personal life project, Mindy and Michael Viamontes (partners at M Viamontes Architecture + Interiors) have rethought the original design of an unfortunately forgotten talent, while preserving many period details such as the plaster mouldings, the doors, the windows and the precious wooden floors. They have combined these skilfully with vintage furniture, accessories and lamps (a tribute to the craftsmanship that the two architects favour in all their projects), paintings by contemporary artists, mirrored elements that dilate the space and refined design pieces. A sophisticated colour palette featuring white, black, grey and gold, interrupted by striking coloured wallpapers, is the common thread throughout the property. Neutral tones are once again the protagonists in the master bathroom, characterised by the timeless elegance of the marble mosaic floor and the Etoile console in a polished nickel finish.
